Jane Boleyn's nephew - Henry Parker, 11th Baron Lord Morley
On the 22nd October 1577, Jane Boleyn’s nephew, Henry Parker, 11th Baron Morley, died. He was the son of Jane’s brother - also called Henry - and his first wife, Grace Newport. He was married to Elizabeth Stanley, who was the daughter of Edward Stanley, the 3rd Earl of Derby and Lady Dorothy Howard (the daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Agnes Tilney).
He became a Roman Catholic exile in Paris after refusing to agree to Elizabeth I's “Act of Uniformity” and after becoming involved in the 1569 Rising of the North. The uprising was an unsuccessful attempt by the Catholic nobles from the North of England to oust Elizabeth I, replacing her with Mary, Queen of Scots. As a result, his residence Great Hallingbury, Jane Boleyn’s childhood home, was seized by the Crown. When Henry died, however, Great Hallingbury was then restored to Henry’s son, Edward Parker, who became the 12th Baron Morley after his death.
The image is of the “Lady Parker” by Hans Holbein. The sitter has often been identified as either Henry’s mother Grace Newport, or even Jane Boleyn herself.
