Use a Tudor Pen
Today has been a big day – for pens! However, if you’re signing a very important document that could change your future, don’t just use any pen. Do like the Tudors did and use a proper quill pen dipped in a bottle of ink. It’s so versatile! You can write on handmade papers, or parchments of a variety of textures.
Of course mistakes will happen and you – or someone else - will want to correct your work for you. So, how did the Tudors erase mistakes? Well, they had to be quick about it, but because they didn’t have any blotting paper, they had to use sand instead. It was the fastest soaking medium.
They would sprinkle the sand using a sand shaker onto the text to soak up the ink. The sand shaker was small enough to be held in your hand and the top of the shaker was pierced with small holes to allow sand to be shaken out of it. Then, the ink-covered sand could just be flicked away from the paper, just like that. If there was any excess left, it was removed by gently scraping it off with a knife.
So, remember next time don’t use a pen, use a Tudor pen!
